"We fish in rivers our Grandfathers fished in long before the arrival of Columbus. We dig roots in meadows our grandmothers dug before the rise of the Roman Empire. We live in the place our ancestors called home before the Great Pyramids of Egypt were built"

Snake River, Hells Canyon, ID
Hells Gate: Clarkston Washington & Lewiston Idaho
Hells Canyon,, North America's deepest river gorge, encompasses a vast and remote region with dramatic changes in elevation, terrain, climate and vegetation. Carved by the great Snake River, Hells Canyon plunges more than a mile below Oregon's west rim, and 8,000 feet below snowcapped He Devil Peak of Idaho's Seven Devils Mountains. There are no roads across Hells Canyon's 10-mile wide expanse, and only three roads that lead to the Snake River between Hells Canyon Dam and the Oregon-Washington boundary.

Avalanche Lake and Avalanche Gorge, Glacier National Park, MT
Hiking is hard work.
Ranger Led Earth Science Hike
Avalanche Lake and Avalanche Gorge can be reached via a 4 mile round trip from the trailhead at Avalanche Campground. It's pleasant hiking along the creek, but there are no views to speak of until you reach the lake. the park guide walked fast, and it was hard for us city slickers to keep up. Avalanche Lake is pleasant, but not one of the most spectacular destinations in Glacier National Park. Worthwhile.

Logan's Pass, Glacier National Park, MT
Glacier is a natural laboratory and students and scientists use its resources to learn more about the world we live in.
Little Ice Age
The extent of mountain glaciers had been mapped by the late 19th century. In both the north and the south temperate zones, snowlines (the boundaries separating zones of net accumulation from those of net ablation) were about 100 m lower than they were in 1975.[19] In Glacier National Park, the last episode of glacier advance came in the late 18th and early 19th century.[20]
Ranger Led Talk: goodbye to the glaciers
The glaciers of Glacier National Park are quickly disappearing due to the effects of global climate change. Join us for an update on where the glaciers are headed, what their leaving will mean for the park, and what you might be able to do to
